Rovaniemi parish

Rovaniemi parish is one of the largest parishes among the Finnish Evangelical-Lutheran parishes, measured on the basis of members and geography. The surface of the parish is 8014 square kilometers. The parish consist of about 50 000 members, which is approximately 85 % of the whole population of the area.

The early stages of Lutheran Parish in Rovaniemi date back to the beginning of 17th century. At the time Rovaniemi was a part of Kemi Cardinal Parish. The first church was built already then. The history as an independent parish begins from 1785. The Parish belongs to the Rovaniemi Deanery and Oulu Bishopric.

 


Parish Central Office is situated beside the main church, in the Parish Centre.

The Church of Rovaniemi

 

The present church of Rovaniemi is the 4th built on the same site in 1950 to replace the church destroyed in the razing of the town during the war in Lapland 1944. The Church was designed by architect Bertel Liljequist. The 14 metre-high altar fresco “Fountain of Life” is painted by Lennart Segerstråle in 1951 and is greatly admired by church visitors. The organ of the church has 45 registers and it was designed and constructed by the Bruno Christensen factory in Denmark.
 

The Church is open in summer from the mid-May to the end of August and at Christmas time from the 1st Advent to Epiphany (Dec.1st– Jan.6th). Other visiting times you can book from the central office.

Holy Mass

Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rovaniemi, Yliopistonkatu 2

On Sunday at 10 o’clock am there is a possibility to have English translation in the mass.

 

Bible Study in English

You can join the Bible study group on Tuesdays in Keltakangas 2-4 at 5.30 pm, near the University of Lapland. You are welcome to join from every kind of religious background, if you are interested in discussing about the Bible.

There are different kind of activities and events for students in the Rovaniemi Parish.

OMA – evenings (meaning you are precious) are held every other Saturday at 5pm in Rauhankatu 70, where translation in English is possible. More information http://omasrk.blogspot.fi/

Pastoral services

The church offers a variety of pastoral services to its members: baptism, confirmation school, marriage, blessing of marriage, blessing of home, and funeral. You can also be baptized and confirmed as an adult, if you wish to join the parish. For to be able to receive some of these abovementioned services (marriage, baptism), it is a prerequisite that you are a member of the Lutheran Church.

A pastor is on call from Monday to Friday 9 a.m – 2 p.m. on normal work days in the parish office at the Parish Centre. You can come to to discuss, receive prayer of intercession or want to become a member of parish. Most pastors also speak English. Call for more information 040 685 4925.
